About Us

Blue Sky designs and markets aircraft seats. Our architecture is unique. We’ve found a way of ”getting a quart into a pint pot”, creating more space and comfort than is possible with any other design – and using the recline mechanism to drive ancillary revenue through comfort upgrades. Our crew rest seats allow airlines to open lucrative routes to new destinations. With the development work done, we are looking for a foundation customer. We need £0.5m for the certification programme, after which our team members will join full time, and £500k in round 2 for commercialisation and business promotion. We are based in Surrey, UK and are negotiating with a multi-national company that wishes to become our global manufacturing partner, which will give instant scalability to win business with the biggest players.

Investment Highlights

We have invested over £2m from private resources and early grant funding.

Vision and Value Proposition

Blue Sky

We aim to change airline travel as we know it and become the supplier of choice by setting a new standard in comfort and cabin layout flexibility.

The value proposition for the airline

Our lightweight seats:
minimise weight, fuel and emissions and
improve route viability, cargo uplift, passenger comfort, ancillary revenue, profitability and competitive advantage.

The Problem

When we are tired, we need to lie down, and we can’t do that in what is effectively a dining chair. So we push our hips forward to improve recline but the torso becomes suspended between the shoulders and coccyx, the front of the seat cuts into the back of the thigh and with an unsupported spine, everything goes numb.

The problem is related to conventional twin-beam architecture in which the seat pan is built on two fixed beams, one under the knees and one behind and below the buttocks. The seat pan is fixed onto these beams. When reclined, the seatback invades the passenger’s space behind, and the immovable seat pan is too high to access under-seat space. This is fine for short-haul flights during the day but not for medium and long haul flights, especially overnight.

Target Market and Opportunity

  • The global fleet will grow by 70.5% by 2040, from 27,400 to 46,720 aircraft.
  • The total addressable market (TAM) will be worth €72bn (£61.9bn)
  • The available market (SAM) based on deliveries over the term of 39,020 is worth €1.1bn (£0.92bn) per annum.
  • The crew rest seat market alone, of 54,000 seats over the term is worth €1.7bn.
  • We conservatively project sales over 4 years of €89.4m (£75.7m).
  • Fastest growth will be in India and Asia Pacific, with domestic China becoming the largest market. Indeed China will build 200 new airports over the next 20 years.

Business Model

Blue Sky will be a lean sales and marketing company. Originally planning to set up our own factory and grow incrementally, we have elected to engage a multi-national corporation specialised in automotive and robotic assembly, who are looking for new growth markets and with whom we now have an LOI. Scalability is cardinal to airlines and airframe manufacturers and this partner has clean facilities on every continent where they can build a volume and be close to the market for logistics and handling minimisation. They are currently assessing the build for further cost savings and automation.

Traction and Validation

Development over a number of years and refinement aligning with the sophistication of carbon moulding processes.

The sales and marketing company is a clean startup emerging from the design company that has carried out all the R&D.

Certification to aerospace standards will open the global market, and we will be ideally placed to benefit from the predicted market growth of 70.5% by 2040.

Marketing and Sales Strategy

Direct contact with airlines at the highest level, initially with the CEO and CFO, who will understand the financial benefits of ancillary revenue and how it can change their business models. Approaches will also be made through the cabin interiors teams responsible for implementing the corporate image. We will also work with airframe manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, Comac and Embraer to have our seats in their ”one-stop” shops.
