Vision and Value Proposition

i-LAPS’ device uses multiple sensors to monitor different parameters related to sports performance simultaneously. These sensors are controlled by voice commands and can monitor the user’s body, vehicle or environment to provide immediate feedback during training. i-LAPS has collaborated with Sheffield Hallam University and Polimi Milan University to utilise its sports sciences and artificial technologies expertise. The University’s data scientists are developing advanced mathematical models to analyse sports performance and generate feedback based on the data collected by the device. The data and feedback are displayed on the athlete’s smartphone or Apple Watch and can be accessed in real time over the cloud by teams, coaches, families and fans.

The Problem

Most people want to be successful in sports, but it’s not easy. It is typical to believe that having exceptional talent is sufficient to win in sports; however, this is not the case; instead, while skill is important by itself, it is not enough.

 

However much we can be perfectly trained and prepared from an athletic, technical, tactical and mental point of view, and however talented we may have, it is inevitable that sooner or later, we will find ourselves having to face difficulties deriving from the specific sport we practice.

 

To reach a constant peak performance that reflects our possibilities and abilities to the maximum, it is essential to be followed by a coach.

 

• Personal coaches are, unfortunately, expensive and

 

• Not always available at the times or locations that consumers require.

 

Because of the athlete’s reliance on high-cost coaching, improvement margins are also influenced by his or her financial situation.

 

However, current health-monitoring applications and wearable gadgets do not provide real-time remote coaching and have inaccurate trackers due to weak sensors.

Target Market and Opportunity

Individual sports practitioners (preferably with a mechanical vehicle) are the potential customer we are addressing in finding ways to challenge themselves to increase performance, particularly in competitive situations.

 

According to population research, the age groups most interested in tracking their health via fitness apps and wearable gadgets are those between the ages of 20 and 39. (Statista, 2022). By mid-2023, however, generation Z smart wearable users are expected to grow and narrow the gap with generation X users (Statista, 2022).

 

From the interviews conducted with potential customers, a clear interest in our solution has emerged, particularly among those who use technology extensively and have a high level of education

The Solution

i-LAPS™ is a wearable eHealth device that can give a comprehensive AI-based professional coaching experience, including a nutrition guide and tailored training programmes that can be managed by voice command. i-LAPS Coach collects data in real time and sends it to the cloud to be processed by artificial intelligence using its SmartHUB sensor network.

 

At a fraction of the expense of a coach, i-LAPS will enable regular people to enhance their sports performance, raise their motivation, and have their own customised voice assistant on hand to offer professional advice and aid them in achieving their goals.

 

Our initial concept/feasibility research demonstrated this value, with 88% of our study participants indicating they wanted to use AI/Coach to optimise their chances of winning competitions/races.

Business Model

We intend to adopt the following revenue models for i-LAPS:

 

1) Selling the HW iCoach Smart Hub for £249 or bundled with a pair of sensors (heart rate/skin temp band + running pod for runners) for £499, including the first 6 months of subscription to the live coaching cloud service.

At the end of the offered period, a monthly subscription of £14.95 ($19.95) or £ 119.95 for one year is charged.

 

2) Selling the HW + Sensors in a Bundle, including the iCoach Cloud service at £49.99 per month without upfront cost with a leasing formula with a minimum duration of 12 months. After the first 12 months, a monthly subscription of £ 19.95 or £ 119.95 for 12 months is charged

Traction and Validation

  • Bercella Pro Racing team contacted i-LAPS in 2019 to inquire about the possibilities of a research and development project to create an innovative, commercial, technological solution to provide elite-sports level virtual coaching for highly motivated amateur competitive racing drivers. 
  • i-LAPS decided to focus on cyclists and runners, as these sportspeople are less accustomed to in-depth performance data analysis than racing drivers.
  • i-LAPS has conducted hundreds of interviews with prospective customers and discovered that 88 per cent are enthusiastic about buying it.
  • Stefano recently brilliantly graduated from the world’s largest network of pre-seed startups accelerator, the Founder Institute, where he had the opportunity to meet numerous mentors and entrepreneurs from all over the world
  • Over 3000 people have applied on our website to be part of the test team.
  • Partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, the world’s largest academic sports engineering group and an internationally known centre of excellence for research and knowledge transfer Sports Engineering Research Group (CSER).
  • We are in contact with numerous professional cycling teams, British Cycling and Team USA MTB, they are waiting to receive working prototypes from i-LAPS to start tests with athletes.
  • We are in partnership with the head of the automation department of Polimi in Milan, Professor Sergio Savaresi, his team holds the world speed record for autonomous racing vehicles.
  • We have obtained from the UK IPO the grant of our patent application.
  • The trade name i-LAPS is a Registered Brand Name in The UK/EU/USA

 

 

Marketing and Sales Strategy

We decided to market our product during the first 12 months, focusing our attention on the cycling market. The global bicycle market size in 2016 was $45B and is projected to grow to $62B by 2024.

i-LAPS is undoubtedly a cool product, and it may seduce analytics-driven men obsessed with smartphones and consider it a perfect gadget to put on their bicycle.

 

We want to sell our invention worldwide. 

 

Our goal is to receive early press for our pre-launch. Ensuring that our start-up outreach is relevant to our product is crucial. It’s entirely possible that some credible article could drive a lot of traffic to our pre-launch page. We have an active mailing list of sports journalists, and we will send them a press kit fifteen days before the pre-launch date.

 

Trade Shows Participation in the industry trade shows will be the key marketing effort for the distributors. There are four main shows, and 80% of industry business is transacted at the shows for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. No one who is seriously participating in the industry misses these shows. The shows provide i-LAPS with an opportunity to show off its product to the distributor and establish relationship with them.

 

Sporting Event Promotion

 

We will set up a custom-printed outdoor tent and invite guests to walk underneath to take advantage of the shade while hearing about the business and demoing products during the major cycling events.

 

Our team of engineers and promoters wearing i-LAPS outfits will be on-site to demonstrate the advantages of i-LAPS, showing the real-time telemetry of athletes using i-LAPS in a race.
